 NUTS 

A nuts is  single celled, single seeded dry fruit with hard pericarp.

These have high protein and  fat contents besides starch ,sugar and mineral elements.

Depending upon the type of content which they contain ,nuts are divided into three categories:-

(1) Nuts with high protein content.

(2) Nuts with high carbohydrates content.

(3) Nuts with high fat content.

(I)   Nuts with high protein content:

(i)Almonds (badam) :prunus amygdalus; Fam- Rosaceae

(ii)Green almond(pista) :pistacia vera ; Fam- Anacardiaceae

(iii)Beech nuts :Fagus sylvatica ; Fam-Fagaceae

(II) Nuts with high carbohydrates  content:

 (i) Chest nut: Castanea sativa ;Fam- Fagaceae

(III) Nuts with high fat content.

(i) Coconut (nariyal):Cocas nucifera; Fam- Palmae

It is commonly known as Kalpavriksha because a number of useful products are obtained from it.

Chiefly grown in Kerala (Kerala mean land of coconut).

Nearly all parts of these nuts are used .These provide a nutritious refreshing juice. The soft kernels are scraped and eaten. The mature nuts provide copra (endosperm) which is used in various ways. Coconut oil is obtained from the copra.

Fibrous mesocarp provides coir. The dry leaves are used for temporary sheds.

(ii)Cashew nut (Kaju) : Anacardium Occidentale ;Fam- Anacardiaceae 

It is native of Brazil.

Most conspicuous product of the tree is 'false fruit' which is a swollen peduncle, known as cashew apple and is the receptacle for the true fruit.

(iii)English walnut( Akhrot) :Juglans regia; Fam- Juglandaceae

It is native of Iran.

The edible portion is the kernals which are the cotyledons of the seed.

(iv)Pine nut(Chilgoza): Pinus gerardiana ; Fam- Pinaceae 

The edible seeds are tasty , nutritious having a delicious flavor.
