MILLET
Millet
Small sized grains are known as millets.
·
The edible portion in millets is endosperm. Some of the important millets are:
- Sorghum: sorghum vulgare (jawar)
- Centre
of origin of Sorghum is Asia and Africa. It is a staple food for
millions of people in these continents.
- Sorghum is used in various ways. i.e., in preparation of paper, brushes, etc.
- It is also used as fodder.
2. Pearl millet: pennisetum typhoides (bajra)
- Centre of origin of Pearl millet is Africa and is the most important Indian millet.
- Pearl millet can be grown in both Kharif as
well as Rabi seasons.
- It can grow well in the regions of less rainfall(dry farming crop).
- Pearl millet also used as food by poor people.
- Its flour is used in making chapatis.
- The plant is also used as forage.
3. Finger millet: Eleusine coracana (Ragi)

Finger millet is also k own as African millet or korakan.
·
Finger millets is most suitable for dry
farming.
·
It can survive in serve drought and is also
survive up to 50yrs without any damage.
·
Finger millet is a Kharif crop.
·
Its flour is used for making chapatis by poor
people and plant is used as forage.
·
Finger millet is used I preparation of infant
food.
4. Proso millet: Panicum miliacum
·
It is called true millet or broom corn millet or Russlan millet or
Indian millet or hog millet.
·
The Centre of origin of Proso millet was most
probably Indian or eastern Mediterranean region.
·
The grains of Proso millet contains good
amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and fat.
·
Proso millet is used as hog feed and bread can
also be made.
5. Foxtail millet: Setaria italica
·
Foxtail millet is also known as Italian or German or Siberian or
Hungarian millet.
·
Centre of origin probably was Eastern Asia.
·
Foxtail millet is used for food and plant is
used as fodder.
