DYES THAT OBTAINED FROM PLANT



Dyes are colored compounds capable of being fixed to fabrics which do not come out on washing with soap.
   These can be obtained from woods, leaves, flowers or rhizomes.

 DYES OBTAINED FROM WOODS:

1.Log wood 
Haematoxylin stain or dye is obtained from heart wood of Haematoxylon compechianum .

2:Catechu or Khair
It is obtained from the wood of Acasia Catechu.
Family:Mimosaceae


3:Sappan wood (Gulal)
This dye is obtained from the heart wood of Caesalpiniaceae sappan.
Family:Caesalpiniaceae


       DYES OBTAINED FROM LEAVES:

1:Indigo(Neel)
It obtained from the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria.
Family:Papilionaceae
This dye is obtained which is used for whitening the clothes.



2:Henna(Mehndi)
Family: Lythraceae
  This is orange dye, obtained from the leaves of Lawsonia inermis.


    
   DYES OBTAINED FROM FLOWERS:

1: Safflower (kasom):
Family: Compositae
This is yellow dye obtained from the flower of Carthamus tinctorius .



2:Flame of forest:
Family: Papilionaceae
This dye is obtained from the flowers of Butea monosperma.   It is yellow color dye .



3:Saffron or Zaffron:
Family: Iridaceae
This is yellow orange colored dye obtained from the flower of Crocus sativus.  It is obtained from dried stigma and upper part of styles .
One ounce of saffron is obtained from 4000 flowers.



4:Tree of sorrow(harsingar):
Family: Oleaceae 
An orange coloured dye is obtained from the flowers of Nyctanthes  arbor-tristis , which is used for coloring cotton and  silk.
   
  DYES OBTAINED FROM RHIZOMES:    
 
1:Turmeric (haldi):
Family: Zingiberaceae
From the rhizomes of turmeric Curcuma longa/Curcuma domestica A yellow colored dye is obtained which is used to color food stuffs.
